Packing the house since 2000

This is the linchpin of "The Island" off Main, catering to every roots, rockabilly and country soul in town. Most any day of the week, one can walk in and plop down at the bar and unwind with the help of a cold Lone Star, great company, and some local music. If the Continental Club doesn't make your Texas heart jump just a little inside your chest, then you are doing something wrong. Also be sure to check out the Pachinko Hut out back when the weather is just right, manned by bartender Big E, who is also playing great B-movies in the background. -Houston Press

Open until 2 a.m. on weekends and located next to one of the city’s hottest music scenes, this hip little taco joint is a popular spot for Houston’s young Midtown crowd in search of a little spicy sustenance after hours of drinking and dancing. Satisfying breakfast tacos are served all day long, and quesadillas and the eight varieties of soft and crispy tacos (pollo guisado, barbacoa, and grilled fish are all tasty choices) make up the majority of the menu. -Culture Map

Big Kat's is a goldmine for old school indulgences, including the hot towel straight razor shave. For all of the topnotch service, the prices remain reasonable — that shave treatment is just a $10 foray, and haircuts ring in at $15. The three barbers ooze personality, as does the resident top hat-toting shoe shiner, Sir Charles. Another bonus: Big E & Co. are in the process of converting a 1949 refrigerator into a fully functioning kegerator, which will provide the men with libations during trims. For the young lads, the machine will also have root beer on tap. -Culture Map
